Kara, Carmelita, Sly, Bentley, Murray, Slic, Roselina, Penelope and Phoebe were an incredibly tight fit in the team's relatively small van. Not to mention that Neyla was lying in back and taking up three seats all to herself.
However, Kara seemed extremely pleased to be sharing Murray's seat with him as he drove, despite how unsafe it was.
Neyla groans sounded from the back of the van as Roselina described what she had seen to everyone. Carmelita stopped glaring at Kara after she heard that the wildcat hadn't really kissed Sly, but she was still too stubborn to apologize for it.
Cars zoomed by the window in colorful blurs and there was a contented silence for a while as they all smiled at the prospect of capturing Neyla behind bars at last.
"Oh!" Sly said suddenly. "Penelope, weren't you supposed to be monitoring that panther? The twins are still at home!"
"Not to worry." Penelope told him, smiling. "Shortly after your departure, I went after the deviant myself. After subduing him in a fist-fight, I pumped some sleep darts into him and carted him back to the big house, so he's safely behind bars once again.
"However," She said, "I must admit that capturing Neyla is a bit more impressive."
"Yeah, but you were all alone!" Kara praised. Penelope blushed and went quiet, burying her face shyly into Bentley's shoulder. The turtle didn't seem to mind.
Suddenly, Murray let out a startled yell that broke them all out of their thoughts. There was a loud squeal as the tires of the van struggled against the momentum of the vehicle, and then the glass of the windsheild shattered as they crashed head-on into another car and went spinning uncontrollably on the bridge they were crossing.
There came a horrible screech of metal on metal as the van collided with the bridge's railing, and then the alloy gave way. The team van lurched forward sickeningly, and Murray only had time to say, "Not again!" before the van tumbled into the water with a large splash.
The team remained surprisingly calm despite the circumstances - maybe it was because they had seen worse. Slic grabbed his sisters and pulled them through the side door, followed closely by their protective mother and Sly, who was holding an unconsious Neyla in his arms as he swam. Bentley and Penelope came next, the small girl swimming with all her might and pulling her boyfriend along with her. Bentley could only use his arms to swim - his legs undulated uselessly in the water, but it was enough for the two of them to reach the surface.
Murray emerged from the water lastly, when the rest of the gang was safely on shore. He'd had to undo his seatbelt and struggle with the driver's side door before he could escape, and Penelope immediately started fussing over the small, bleeding cuts left by broken glass on the hippo's hands and face.
Murray seemed less concerned with his bleeding forhead than he was with his "baby". Tears welled up in his eyes as he looked out at the water.
"It's okay, Murray." Penelope comforted as she finished daubing at his cuts with a cloth she had pulled from her pocket.
Sly placed a hand on his best friend's shoulder. "Yeah, buddy, it's just a van. It could've been worse."
"Not that." Murray said hoarsely. "N-not... Kara, she..."
At that moment, the rest of the gang realized that the sorceress had not yet come up from the water.
"But she can teleport!" He shouted as the rest of the troup fell deathly silent around him. "She can teleport up here! There's no way she's..."
Looking frantic and desperate, Murray shoved Sly's hand away and dove back into the muddy water.
Phoebe hugged Penelope as the mouse broke the silence with a gasp and began to cry.
The water under the bridge was cloudy and thick as Murray awkwardly swam back downwards. It was no secret that he was a terrible swimmer, but he was determined to reach the van, even though his lungs were already burning in protest.
He tugged open the passenger side door with difficulty and was met with the sight of Kara, a bad gash above her eyebrow, seemingly unconcious as she floated in the now completely submerged van. Her staff was laying on the passenger seat, just in her reach, but of course it was useless to her in this state.
Murray held it tightly between his teeth and grabbed Kara, easing her legs from under the dashboard. His lungs screaming at him, he pushed off from his van and kicked stubbornly towards the surface.
They broke the water, Murray gasping in relief and Kara frighteningly unresponsive. Penelope and Sly crowded around her immediately as soon as Murray had laid her on the ground, safely out of water's reach.
Penelope's knowledge of health was of no use - she simply collapsed onto her friend, sobbing harshly into the wildcat's gray fur. "You can't, you can't!"
"Penelope." Bentley said gently, unable to move, as his wheelchair had been lost with the van. "Give her room. She needs air. We need to apply pressure to her chest and get the water out of her lungs."
Penelope gave a shuddering gasp and pressed her palms to Kara's chest, pressing firmly as instructed. Kara's lips parted as a stream of water pushed itself out, but she didn't begin to breathe.
Murray remained frozen at her side, staring at Kara's face in disbelief.
"This is impossible." He muttered to himself. "She was just here!"
His outburst finally reached Phoebe, who had gotten to know Kara well in her time with Penelope and Bentley, and she burst into silent tears and buried her face in her brother's side.
Suddenly, as though waking from a bad dream, Kara gave a loud gasp, followed by a series of harsh coughs that drove Penelope backwards. The mouse looked stunned. Kara flopped backwards again and sprawled on the dirt with a loud, uncomfortable groan.
"Kara!" Murray was the first to compose himself. He fell to his knees and pulled the girl into a hug. She looked at him in groggy surprise. "I thought... I thought you were dead, Kara." He told her, his voice cracking. "... I didn't know what I was gonna do."
"Dummy." Kara said in a hoarse voice. "I'm not going anywhere. Rajan would kill me all over again."
Murray laughed weakly and hugged her tighter.
"A promise is a promise right?" Kara muttered. "And dying young is for losers anyway."
